Re "'Conservatives' were Dems" (Letters, Aug 23): The letter writer missed the point of the column. It never stated Republican or Democrat. It said "conservative".
During the Civil war and for many years after, many southern Democrats were conservative and still are. You can see this by the swing of the south after the Civil Rights era when the south went from being reliably Democrat to Republican.
The point of the column was to point out that resisting change, a fundamental facet of conservative view, is often on the wrong side of society's progress. The changes cited were abolishing slavery, women's right to vote. etc.
