Weekend Poll: How many games will the 49ers win this season?

Leading Off: Hey, Jaws, Kaepernick still has lots to prove

Reading time, two minutes …

• We couldn't help but chuckle when we heard that ESPN's Ron Jaworski, a former NFL quarterback, said the 49ers' Colin Kaepernick "could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever." It's not that we don't think Kaepernick has a bright future, but he hasn't even played a full season. And he's going to need to have several outstanding seasons to even be in the conversation about the greatest 49ers quarterbacks. Folks around here still are quite fond of Joe Montana, Steve Young, John Brodie, Y.A. Tittle and Frankie Albert. In 10 years perhaps Kaepernick will be on that list.

• Speaking of the 49ers, have you taken a close look at the schedule? We'll know a lot more about the team – and Kaepernick – after the first five games, all against teams with proven or up-and-coming quarterbacks: Sept. 8 vs. Green Bay (Aaron Rodgers), Sept. 15 at the Seahawks (Russell Wilson), Sept. 22 vs. the Colts (Andrew Luck), Sept. 26 at the Rams (Sam Bradford) and Oct. 6 vs. the Texans (Matt Schaub). Anything worse than 3-2 could dampen the enthusiasm about the 49ers contending for the Super Bowl.

• If you're an expert on the NFL – and aren't we all? – and you love Hawaii – who doesn't? – sign up for our "Pro Football Challenge" at www.sacbee.com/propicks starting Sunday and pick the winners each week. In addition to weekly prizes, the overall national winner at the end of the season gets a seven-day trip for two to Maui. Let's see what you've got.
