A header from sophomore forward Haley Hughes in the 32nd minute and a point-blank save in the second half from junior goalkeeper Taylor Jern helped the UC Davis women's soccer team defeat Sacramento State 1-0 at Aggie Soccer Field on Friday, UCD reported.
It was the season opener for both teams.
UC Davis is unbeaten in the Causeway Cup in the last seven years and at home against the Hornets in the last eight.
"I feel that Sacramento State, no matter when you play them throughout the year, is a game you have to win," Jern said. "Even though they are not in our conference, they are our biggest rivals. Ask any UC Davis person even one that does not know sports they know that we have to beat Sacramento State."
UC Davis dominated possession throughout the match, allowing only five shots.
The Aggies fired 12 shots at Hornets goalkeeper Kimberly Mata.
