Re "Manning wants to live as a woman in prison" (Page A6, Aug. 23): The Sacramento Bee's decision to refer to Chelsea (formerly known as Bradley) Manning as male is not only inaccurate, but also demonstrates ignorance about gender, as she has publicly stated that she considers herself female. There is no evidence that Manning is using gender identity as a ploy for preferential treatment, contrary to what some have been suggesting. If one has followed the Manning case, it is obvious that her decision to come out as transgender is not a sudden revelation. Chelsea Manning has requested that the public refer to her as female, and we should afford her this basic level of respect -- just as each reader of this letter should be regarded with the gender of their preference.
