Re "Arena issue, Egypt compared" (Letters, Aug. 24): The City Council was all in favor of Measure U last November, asking voter input on a half-cent sales tax increase. That measure was worth $162 million ($27 million a year for six years). The public subsidy in the city's arena term sheet is $212.5 million, to be paid with city funds over 35 years.
Why the hesitancy by the council to put this on the ballot when the arena construction money is so much more than Measure U? It may be time for the council to be consistent when seeking voter opinion. Pick-and-choose democracy by our elected officials doesn't pass the smell test.
