Re "Rim fire enters Yosemite" (Page A1, Aug. 24): Gov. Jerry Brown was quick to declare a state of emergency when San Francisco's water supply and power grid was threatened by the Rim fire. This allows additional resources to be allocated to fighting that fire. Last time I looked, San Francisco residents did not have to pay the illegal "fee" assessed to rural residents for Cal Fire protection.
Of course that "fee" provides no additional services. Luckily, we fund our local fire district, which is almost always the first to respond to both structural and wildland fires. I see a rich irony and not a little bit of hypocrisy in that when fire threatens an urban area, the governor does not treat citizens differently based upon where they live.
