Re "Burn your petitions, Hansen" (Marcos Breton, Aug. 25): As we celebrate the March on Washington by Martin Luther King Jr. and the resulting Voting Rights Act, powers in our community want to burn my signature on a petition and prevent me from voting on a major financial liability to me as a resident, voter and taxpayer in Sacramento. What would Dr. King think today?
I just returned from overseas, where the right to vote is more fragile than here, to a signature gatherer in Cesar Chavez Park. I was well informed on the issue and signed the petition willingly. Now Breton says my signature should be burned.
Why? Is he aligned with the forces that want to prevent me from voting? Yes. Do the entrenched politicians and billionaires want me and the public to vote? No.
