Re "Sheriffs don't get to pick laws they will enforce" (Editorials, Aug. 25): The editorial board painted California sheriffs who resist oppressive legislative gun control efforts as being rogues who need to "fall in line." As a citizen, I say God bless these sheriffs for protecting my constitutional rights.
In another time upstarts such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin would have been considered rogues for their stand. These sheriffs are heroes who understand statistics that show that an armed populace reduces gun crime. We only need to look to Mexico or Chicago as two anti-gun societies where gun crime has run rampant because only criminals have guns.
I encourage readers to join the National Rifle Association and California Rifle and Pistol Association and lend your voices to support these sheriffs and other like-minded people. Write your members of Congress and state legislators regularly on this issue. Hard-won constitutional rights must be fought for constantly, otherwise they will be taken away by tyrants.
