Re "At 100, she's going strong" (Our Region, Aug. 25): It is wonderful Maxine Tuttle celebrates her 100th birthday with her life extended by her heart surgery. She is the beneficiary of health care workers, product innovation and a system that pays the $100,000 bill.
Readers will note frequent articles about new treatments that may extend lives, however, for a variety of reasons are costly. I support Obamacare because it will give more access to health care. However, it will not stop rising health care spending. We could slow the increase by lowering wages to workers in health care industry, reforming malpractice laws and requiring patients to pay more for their own care.
If we wanted to stabilize or decrease spending we would have to ration care. But who is going to say no to Tuttle? Her family or doctor, you, me or Congress? Not likely. Expect to spend more money on health care, and be grateful whether you or someone else needs it.
