Students and visitors to Sacramento State on Tuesday and Wednesday the first two days of the fall semester can park for 35 cents each day if they use their phones to pay.
Campus officials are promoting a pay-by-phone method to park.
Students generally seek out payment machines or line up at the information kiosk to obtain daily parking permits. The 35-cent fee covers the convenience fee for using the automated service.
Motorists can sign up at www.paybyphone.com. They have to supply their license plate and credit card numbers and then download the free phone app.
They can park in student-designated areas by using the code 5115. People with more basic cellphones can call (866) 234-7275 to get a permit.
Two-hour users will get a text when parking time is about to expire, giving them the option to buy more time, according to a university press release.
The pay-by-phone program began at the campus in April. An average of 75 to 100 people used the service daily, compared to 1,500 with 2,000 who used paper permits, according to campus officials.
