Re "Boehner targets health law as debt showdown nears" (Page A6, Aug. 29): If the Republicans are serious about reducing the debt and not just scuttling President Barack Obama's remarkable Affordable Health Care Act, they should reduce our obscene spending recommended for the military. The Pentagon budget exceeds $600 billion, more than the next 20 countries combined and amounts to 57 percent of the total budget. Education gets 6 percent.
The American Friends Service Committee is seeking to raise the amount spent in one minute on the military -- $1.2 million -- to promote peace.
