Sacramento area weather: Today hottest of week; cool down starts Sunday

Temperatures are expected to be above normal today and Saturday in the Sacramento region before a delta breeze arrives Sunday with cooler weather.

National Weather Service forecasters predict that the maximum temperatures today and Saturday - the final two days of August - will both reach at least 90 degrees. That will bring the total number of days in the month with readings of 90 degrees or higher to 23, according to forecasters.

In August 1967, 30 out of 31 days were above 90 degrees, the record for Sacramento.

The detailed, 7-day forecast for the Sacramento region from the NWS:

Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 64. West northwest wind around 6 mph becoming south in the evening.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 95. South southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 63. South wind 6 to 9 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 91. South southwest wind around 7 mph.

Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Labor Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88.

Monday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 62.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 88.

Tuesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 59.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 89.

Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 59.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 91.
