Galt High School closed down early today after seven students suddenly fell ill with unexplained influenza-like symptoms, such as vomiting and fevers, school officials said.
Officials canceled classes before noon out of an abundance of caution for the well-being of the more-than 1,000 students enrolled in the high school, said Jean Malmgren, executive assistant to the Galt Joint Union School District superintendent.
Three of the ill students were hospitalized in Sacramento; one was sent to a hospital in Lodi and three other sick kids were released to their parents, Malmgren said.
"Originally, it was thought it could be pinpointed to some donuts," said Malmgren. "But then they couldn't specifically say that was the case without a doubt."
Galt police offiicers, the superintendent and educators were combing the school classroom by classroom, looking for possible environmental factors that may have sickened the students.
