Cats glance: Loss to Tacoma ends Cats' playoff hopes

Published: Sunday, Sep. 1, 2013 - 12:00 am | Page 5C

The skinny: A 4-0 defeat to the host Tacoma Rainiers on Saturday eliminated the River Cats from the Pacific Coast League postseason race for the first time since 2006. The defeat, coupled with an 8-6 win by Las Vegas over Tucson, leaves the Cats three games behind the 51s in the Pacific Conference South Division with two to play.

Tough one: River Cats starter Bruce Billings missed his third and final opportunity to win his 14th game.

Missed chance: The River Cats loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but one out later, Addison Russell, just up from Class-A Stockton, popped out.

Today: River Cats RHP Travis Banwart (10-5, 4.43 ERA) vs. Tacoma LHP James Paxton (8-11, 4.39), 1:30 p.m., Cheney Stadium, Tacoma, Wash.
