Re "Obama holds off on Syria strike" (Page A1, Sept. 1): President Barack Obama wisely holds off on a military action that would inevitably result in the death of at least a few children whose mangled bodies would be shown around the world and blamed on America in the eyes of the world. Obama has wisely gone to Congress for a better solution.
Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has proposed to help the Syrian people defend themselves by assisting vetted elements of the Syrian opposition in obtaining more effective weapons. That is a much better solution that avoids killing children and civilians by direct American military action.
