Re "Three cheers for the Brits" (Letters, Aug. 31): In my view, there is not much to add to Gary Meyer's thoughtful letter, which I am in total agreement with.
Syria is one of the last existing states in the Middle East that stands for independence from its colonial past. Like most, I certainly believe that the use of chemical weapons is a horrendous policy, regardless of which side uses them. I think that President Barack Obama's decision to consult with the Congress, prior to the launch of a strike against Syria, is a step in the right direction. However, I also wish that he would be able to change this nation's foreign policy from one of promoting neocolonialism to one of encouraging the independence of nations.
