Re "Hard-fought battles built the middle class" (Editorials, Sept. 2): It was the last paragraph of this article that made it so painfully obvious, one has to wonder why you came so close to using that word -- you know, that word tied to every aspect of what is necessary to improve the health of the middle class.
You wrote "the health of the middle class needs to be better, but it will improve only if a strong economy is built on a foundation of strong protections for working families." I reply simply, "Unions!"
You wrote "an 8 hour workday." I reply "Unions!" You wrote "workplace safety standards." I reply "Unions!" You wrote "unemployment insurance." I reply "Unions!"
So who should be remembered on Labor Day? The union men, women and children of America.
