Re "An alternative path on Syria" (Letters, Sept. 3): Let's get real about Syria. We are dealing with a violent civil war that is a fight to the death between a despot who murders his own people and the rebels made up mostly of jihadists, with 100,000 people dead and millions of refugees and no end in sight.
We shouldn't choose between either of these evils, but once the self-imposed "red line" was crossed the game changed as the president said. It was a mistake to draw the line, but once drawn we cannot afford to not follow through. Israel and Iran are watching to see if President Barack Obama will make good on his threat.
An American military response in Syria may enable us to avoid military action against Iran. If Israel doesn't believe that America has her back, and Iran doesn't fear American action, then Israel may take unilateral action to defend herself.
