Re "Community should get its way on gun stores" (Viewpoints, Sept. 3): Is this new city ordinance really the wish of the community, or the wish of the City Council? Was there a poll or a vote taken to affirm this is the community's wish? Is this really to protect the community or a matter of political grandstanding to gain publicity, because this is a newsworthy topic?
Bruce Maiman compares gun shops to nightclubs, porn shops, card rooms, pot shops, etc. These businesses can be nuisances. They can generate police complaints. But did Maiman bother to check the see if this holds true for gun shops? Gun shops don't tend to generate police complaints.
As for locating a gun shop next to a church or school, what are zoning laws and police review for?
