Re "A school that cares triumphs" (Marcos Breton, Sept. 4): I will never understand The Bee's attitude that veteran teachers are using outdated teaching methods. We receive exactly the same training as the priority school teachers, but we do it on our own time.
Marcos Breton is misleading in his description of the layoff lawsuit. The judge ruled that seniority could be skipped only if special training could be proven. Almost all of the laid-off teachers with more seniority had to be rehired as the judge ruled they had equivalent training and skills. Teachers, just like doctors, must prove continuing education both by district contract and to renew a credential.
The Bee seems to want all brand new teachers, but do they ask for the brand new doctor when medical care is needed? Veteran teachers are the best of both worlds: We continue to learn and refine our craft and have experience necessary to run the classroom.
