Re "Obama seeks world support as he ponders Syria strike" (Page A7, Sept. 5): U.S. military involvement in Syria will only cause more problems in the Middle East. I have been thinking of a solution.
It's probably not a new idea, but what if our president, instead of looking bewildered, were to announce that the United States would not be part of any increase in violence anywhere in the world. Then we would begin a campaign of funding faith-based and secular efforts to help all the displaced people in the area.
This truly compassionate response to the war in Syria would be so shocking to the world, it might just spark similar efforts from other countries. This effort would come with no strings attached and not be politicized. Maybe we could be eventually seen by people living in the Middle East and other areas of the world as a nation of peace.
