The Sacramento State and UC Davis men's soccer teams will host the four-team Copa de Causeway today and Sunday.
The Hornets (1-0-0) will play Cal State Bakersfield (0-1-0) today at 5 p.m. and Seattle (0-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m., both at Hornet Field.
UC Davis (0-2-0) will host Seattle today at 5 p.m. and Bakersfield on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Teams will earn three points for a win and one point for a tie. In addition to a champion being decided, an all-tournament team will be selected.
Sac State, under 25-year coach Michael Linenberger, features a lineup heavy with former area prep standouts.
Among the contributors are Andrew Gosselin, Andres Garcia and Nate Barr (Jesuit); Trevor Jackson and Preston Davis (Bella Vista); Chimdum Mez and Alex Gulseth (Franklin); Adam Rodriguez and Mathew Fisher (Granite Bay); Mason McCann (Sheldon); and Javier Munoz (Galt).
Mez had the winning goal in Sac State's 1-0 double-overtime win at San Jose State last Friday.
UC Davis has four former area players: Matt Wisenfarth (Jesuit), Kris Schultz (Natomas), Logan Magonigal (Pleasant Grove) and Ryan Gross (Davis).
As part of the Sac State event, the Hornets women will play UNLV today at 2:30 p.m. and San Jose State on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Sac State volleyball tourney set
The 11th annual Sacramento State Invitational women's volleyball tournament will be held today and Saturday at Hornet Gym.
The field consists of Cal Poly, San Jose State and Central Connecticut and host Sac State, coming off a 4-0 performance in the La Salle Invitational last weekend.
In today's matches, Cal Poly and Central Connecticut meet at 4 p.m., and Sac State faces San Jose State at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Cal Poly plays San Jose State at 10 a.m., Sac State faces Central Connecticut at 12:30 p.m., Central Connecticut plays San Jose State at 3 p.m., and Sac State faces Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
Sac State sophomore Sloan Lovett, who made the La Salle Invitational all-tournament team, was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.
Weltz makes U.S. swimming team
UC Davis volunteer assistant coach and 2012 Olympian Scott Weltz made the 2013-14 U.S. national swimming team. The two-time Big West Conference Male Athlete of the Year is one of six swimmers slated for the 200-meter breaststroke.
Weltz made the cut by virtue of his meet-record time of 2 minutes, 10.36 seconds at the U.S. Open.
