In praise of pozole, and where to find a good bowl on Sunday

Ah yes, nothing like a steaming spoonful of pozole on a lazy Sunday morning. The spicy broth is just enough to help you sweat out some toxins if you’re still recovering from Saturday night shenanigans. A sprinkling of lime and cilantro over the top helps awaken the senses, and the mix of hominy and pork (or other meats) is just enough to get you feeling full without venturing into bloated territory. Add some radish and shredded cabbage, plus a couple of piping corn tortillas, and you’ll be properly fueled for the rest of the day. No wonder pozole ranks as a particularly classic New Year’s Day food.

Nothing beats a good bowl of homemade pozole made by grandma or “abuelita,” but the process of simmering a proper pot can take up to eight hours. Pozole from a Mexican restaurant can usually be really hit and miss - our longtime Sacramento favorite for pozole is La Placita (8164 Florin Rd., Sacramento) - but we’ve got a line on where to find an especially good bowl on Sunday.

Head to Mayahuel (1200 K St., Sacramento) on Sunday where pozole verde will be served as part of a special Mexican brunch, which includes the refreshing and re-hydrating properties of agua fresca, plus brunch cocktails and more in an all-you-can-eat setting. This brunch doubles as a fundraiser for Chicas Latinas de Sacramento, a non-profit which specializes in local philanthropy and community support.

The brunch runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and tickets cost $25 or $15 for ages 5 to 12. Additional menu items include chilaquiles, mole poblano con pollo and non-alcoholic drinks will also be provided. Click here to buy tickets.
