Regional Digest: Cal Poly beats Sac State, wins volleyball tourney

Cal Poly defeated the Hornets 19-25, 25-15, 25-23, 21-25, 15-3 in the third and final round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, Sac State reported.

Cal Poly (4-2 overall) won the tournament with a 3-0 record. Sac State (5-2 overall), San Jose State and Central Connecticut each finished 1-2. The Hornets beat Central Connecticut earlier Saturday.

Sac State's Sloan Lovett was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight week.

• UC Davis fell to Illinois State 22-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-22, 15-12 in the championship match of the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno, UCD reported.

UC Davis' Devon Damelio and Katie Quinn were selected to the all-tournament team.

The Aggies, who earlier defeated Grand Canyon in four sets, moved to 3-4.


• The Natomas Racquet Club announced it will host a $100,000 men's Challenger tennis tournament Sept. 28 to Oct. 6. The field will feature 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Players ranked as high as No. 50 in the world typically compete in Challengers.

• Austin Beckwith scored with 1:16 remaining in the second sudden-victory period to lift No. 17 UC Davis to a 12-11 victory over No. 12 Air Force, completing a Day 1 sweep at the Triton Invitational men's water polo tournament in San Diego, according to UCD. The Aggies opened their season earlier in the day with a 12-10 victory over Cal Baptist.
