Nevadan leads NorCal Open golf tournament

Scott Smith shot a 6-under-par 65 Tuesday to take the lead after the second round of the Northern California Open at Whitney Oaks. He has a two-round total of 5-under 137.

Smith, a former University of Nevada golfer and Nevada State Amateur champion from Fallon, Nev., leads by two shots over first-round co-leader Grant Norton (72) of Rancho Murieta and John Jackson (69) of Marina.

Forty professionals and eight amateurs made the 36-hole cut. The 54-hole event, with a purse of $50,000 and first-place prize of $6,000, concludes today.

Cameron Champ (73), an 18-year-old high school senior from Sacramento, is tied for fifth and is the low amateur. Carmichael's Austin Roberts (74), also an amateur, is tied for 13th.

Salinas' Matt Pridey, who shared the first-round lead, shot a 79 and is tied for 18th.
