Re "Allow nonunion workers for arena project" (Viewpoints, Sept. 12): Sacramento politicians once again have proven their mercenary streak. I support building the arena downtown, and think it will have positive influences on the region. But this Project Labor Agreement smells.
The union has replaced club-wielding thugs with environmental lawyers who pretend to care about the environment while filing CEQA suits to further their goals by intimidation and delay. These are obvious ploys to get unions what they want, as displayed with the lawsuit over the rail yards project, and their willingness to drop the same kind of suit over the arena, providing they get the contract.
The city rationalizes it by saying the project will provide jobs, but we all know this is a payoff to remove an obstacle the unions themselves threatens to put up. The truth is this would provide more jobs if it were not a Project Labor Agreement.
