Woman who fatally struck man with bicycle won’t face charges

A Truckee woman who struck a pedestrian while riding her bicycle – causing injuries leading to the man’s death – will not be charged.

Nevada County Deputy District Attorney William Cornell has determined the findings in the case do not support filing a criminal manslaughter charge, according to a spokesperson.

The bicyclist, Petra Borhani-Bakker, 24, who was arrested on suspicion of riding under the influence of alcohol following the July 4 accident in Truckee, also will not face that charge, the district attorney’s spokesperson said.

Borhani-Bakker, whose surname was reversed in earlier Truckee Police Department news releases, was riding a bicycle on Donner Pass Road along Donner Lake at 9:25 p.m., just as the annual fireworks show was about to begin, when her bicycle struck a male pedestrian.

The man, Leonard Richard Whitlow, 46, of Sparks, Nev., received major head injuries. He initially was taken to the Truckee hospital, then flown to a Reno hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The spokesperson said Cornell, who was not available for comment, “has reviewed the entire file – the facts, reports and evidence – and has decided to file no charges.”
