The History Press just released a new scholarly work chronicling the birth, growth and decline of Sacramento’s Japantown.

Drawing on oral histories and previously unpublished photos, author Kevin Wildie examines the city’s vibrant Japanese neighborhood from its origins in 1890, through its flourishing before WWII, and its eventual disappearance following the 1942 internment, postwar resettlement and 1960s redevelopment.

The volume includes an appendix listing of businesses located in Japantown in 1940.

Kevin Wildlie, who teaches at Yuba College and Cosumnes River College, earned his BA and MA in history from Sacramento State.
