A major wholesale bakery in Elk Grove will close in November, eliminating 128 jobs.

The shutdown of Bimbo Bakeries USA’s plant marks the second big bakery closure in the Sacramento region in less than a year.

Bimbo said the Elk Grove plant wasn’t competitive and production is being shifted to other facilities.

“It was apparent that the facility did not have the infrastructure and manufacturing capability to compete in the marketplace,” said Joe Dangelmaier, the company’s regional vice president of operations, in a press release.

The company, a subsidiary of Mexican conglomerate Grupo Bimbo, makes bread and other products under brand names such as EarthGrains, Entenmann’s, Sara Lee and Oroweat.

Dangelmaier said Bimbo will meet with workers and union officials to discuss severance and related issues. The affected workers are represented by Local 85 of the bakery union. Officials with the union weren’t immediately available for comment.

The closure comes less than a year after Sacramento lost its Hostess Brands Inc. bakery on Arden Way, which was shuttered after the company went out of business.
