Government shutdown would be big mistake, maybe

Re "House GOP sliding toward big shutdown" (Page A1, Sept. 18): Californians pay $1,466 more per capita in federal taxes than our state receives in per capita federal spending.

So, if tea party Republicans succeed in shutting down the federal government, we should stop sending our federal tax dollars directly to Washington to be frozen by the do-nothing congress. Instead, we could fund our own federal programs here directly, and put that $1,466 extra per person, which normally goes to supporting red states, to work here in California.

We could even give Siskiyou County some of the extra federal money it needs to fund its essential services.
