The Melt, a San Francisco restaurant chain that specializes in fancy grilled cheese sandwiches, plans to open a restaurant in Davis this fall, its first in the Sacramento area, the company said in a press release this week. No opening date was announced.
The Melt currently has 22 locations throughout the state. It was founded in 2011 by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jonathan Kaplan, who made a fortune when he sold his company, which made the Flip Video camera, to Cisco Systems for $590 million, according to press reports. Kaplan has declared that within five years he plans to have 500 Melt locations around the country, and 100 buses on the road serving up sandwiches.
