A Winton man suffered unspecified major injuries when his vehicle was stuck by a Peterbilt tractor-trailer just outside Atwater, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Jose Oseguera, 44, was driving east on Westside Boulevard approaching Sultana Drive when, for unknown reasons, the southbound red Peterbilt driven by Jing Shi of Canada “failed to yield the right of way” to Oseguera, the CHP said.

The front of Oseguera’s vehicle collided with the right side of Shi’s vehicle. Both vehicles sustained major damage and came to rest in the intersection, the CHP said.

Oseguera was flown to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. A hospital spokesman said they had “no information” about Oseguera’s condition Friday.

Shi suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced.

The semi-trailer’s fuel tank ruptured in the collision, spilling about 50 gallons of diesel fuel onto the dirt shoulder, which was cleaned up a short time later by emergency responders, the CHP said.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation Friday, but the CHP said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors.
