49ers left guard Mike Iupati vs. Colts nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin

The 49ers' running game is tied for 17th in the league, and most of the yards have been picked up by quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers will try to get Frank Gore rolling behind what has been billed as the best offensive line in the league. That group, including Iupati, struggled in Seattle. The Colts, meanwhile, have three former 49ers on defense – Franklin, defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois and backup linebacker Cam Johnson. And the unit is led by former 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky.

• The Colts would love to set up the same play-action attack with Trent Richardson and Andrew Luck that was so successful for Luck at Stanford. The 49ers, who gave up 98 rushing yards to Marshawn Lynch last week, must take away the running game to thwart that plan.

• The 49ers must get out to a fast start. In his 12 NFL starts, Kaepernick has led one touchdown drive to begin the game. Another drive ended with a field goal. The rest have been three-and-outs.

• The 49ers came away from the Seattle game with 10 injured players. With a short week to prepare for a game in St. Louis – Thursday at 5:25 p.m. – they want to emerge from the Colts game as healthy as possible.

• Questionable: TE Vernon Davis (hamstring), RB LaMichael James (knee), DT Ray McDonald (ankle), S Eric Reid (concussion)

• Probable: LB NaVorro Bowman (wrist), Mike Iupati (shoulder), QB Colin Kaepernick (foot), LB Aldon Smith (back), DT Justin Smith (shoulder)

• Out: S LaRon Landry (ankle), LB Pat Angerer (knee)

• Questionable: C Samson Satele (elbow), S Antoine Bethea (toe)

• Probable: WR T.Y. Hilton (groin), LB Kavell Conner (ankle), WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (ribs), WR Reggie Wayne (shoulder), WR David Reed (quadriceps)
