Offense: Colin Kaepernick spends another game searching downfield but finding nowhere to throw. Frank Gore looks great for one series in the second quarter, but the 49ers don't follow up with the running game. Grade: D

Defense: The 49ers begin the game with two defensive penalties, and it becomes a theme. Flags at inopportune times, as well as more mis-tackles, doom the 49ers in the second half. Grade: C

Special teams: Kendall Hunter replaces Perrish Cox on kick returns, but he doesn't do much with the opportunity. The return game could use a spark, which LaMichael James – soon to be healthy again – provided last season. Grade: C+

Overall: One star defender is heading for treatment. Another is nursing a groin injury. To top it off, the 49ers have a short week to prepare for a team, St. Louis, they could not beat last season. Dark days, indeed. Grade: D
