The Sacramento Regional Technology Alliance’s MedStart Connect event, highlighting medical technology innovation, will be held Wednesday evening at Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California.

The event is from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at 2425 Stockton Blvd., in Sacramento.

It will feature BGI – the world-renowned genomics firm from Shenzhen, China – as the 2013 “Succeeding in Sacramento” med tech organization.

In 2012, UC Davis signed an agreement with the Chinese firm to establish a genomics lab on the university's Sacramento medical campus. The SARTA event will include remarks from Bart Weimer, co-director of BGI at UC Davis and a professor at the university, and Qiaoning Guan, co-director of BGI at UC Davis.

The gathering also will include presentations on innovations, med tech startup challenges and reaching milestones. SARTA says there are 126 med tech firms in the Sacramento region.

MedStart Connect is preceded, from noon to 5:30 p.m., by a Symposium on Innovation Ecosystems organized by the National Science Foundation-funded Ecosystems for Biophotonics Innovation Program at UCD. Multiple expert speakers are scheduled to attend.
