Re "Sneaky marijuana legislation needs to stop" (Viewpoints, Sept. 22): Despite what Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully writes, there was nothing sneaky about my medical marijuana bill.
Ever since I got to Sacramento, I've openly proposed legislation to implement the voters' will expressed in the passage of Proposition 215 while district attorneys like Scully reflexively try to put the genie back in the bottle.
The late bill was no surprise attack. It was basically what I proposed in February. The major change was adding ideas from Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, author of a bill with language identical to mine -- something Scully seems not to have noticed.
Scully tries to tie these laws to crime, when in fact our legislation is the only thing that would help separate responsible growers and sellers from the bad actors she complains about. California needs regulation, not the one-note prosecutorial approach that has proved a horrible failure for decades.
