Kudos to: St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Carmichael

Accomplishment: Helped out students at Starr King School

Details: Church members donated 111 new backpacks and 1,500 composition books to students. The backpacks went to students who didn’t have them. The composition books went to all the students. Parishioners also provided child care so parents could attend back-to-school meetings.

Kudos to: George and Isabel Story, high school benefactors

Accomplishment: Donated $50,000 to Esparto High School in memory of their niece, Cynthia A. Durst

Details: The money will go toward the cost of conducting math and science courses by purchasing test equipment and paying for tutors and college lectures. Durst, who died recently, was a 1979 graduate of Esparto High.

Kudos to: Thelma Matthews, Sacramento State police officer

Accomplishment: Matthews saved the life of a 47-year-old soccer player.

Details: She was summoned to the soccer field, where the man was not breathing. She administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used a portable heart defibrillator to revive him. The man left the hospital a few days later.
