Jockeying among Republicans aiming to unseat Democratic Rep. Ami Bera continued last week, as the Washington-based FreedomWorks PAC endorsed a former aide to Rep. Tom McClintock.
Igor Birman, who was McClintocks chief of staff, is taking on former Rep. Doug Ose, who relinquished his seat after serving three terms in the House, and autism activist Elizabeth Emken, who finished a distant second last year to Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
The support of FreedomWorks, which typically backs tea party candidates and causes, could help Birman brandish his conservative credentials in suburban Sacramento Countys 7th Congressional District, where Republican and Democratic voter registration is nearly evenly divided.
The PAC spent $19.6 million in the 2012 election.
Birman was the clear choice, FreedomWorks PAC President Matt Kibbe said in a release.
Ose noted the unanimous support hes received from elected council members in Folsom and Citrus Heights.
The district is considered a toss-up and is again expected to produce one of the countrys most expensive races.
