Paul Marsh was known as a key sommelier at The Firehouse, but he’s since left Old Sacramento to launch Stockton’s first bona fide wine bar.

Mile Wine Co. opened Sept. 27 at 2113 Pacific Ave., on a stretch near the University of the Pacific known as the Miracle Mile. He’s brought a 2,000-bottle inventory with 125 labels and 25 wines by the glass to the city.

The wines, which can be paired with panini sandwiches and other gourmet deli offerings, include local producers from nearby Lodi, boutique Napa vintners, Burgundy and other selections from around the world.

“The concept is Oakville Grocery meets 58 Degrees meets that old-school Brooklyn deli,” said Marsh. “It’s really serious food, but playful and (for the) neighborhood.”

Marsh has lived in Stockton for the past seven years and until August was used to an hour-long commute to The Firehouse, known for its 20,000-bottle wine cellar. Marsh’s Mile Wine Co. is just a few minutes away from his house, and so far the locals have packed his newly opened wine bar, he said.

The clientele has included UOP professors, wine professionals from Sacramento and Napa and plenty of locals from the neighborhood, which is something like Stockton’s version of east Sacramento.

“It’s been kind of a mad rush, and we haven’t had any serious advertising,” Marsh said. “As soon as people saw the chairs out there, they started coming in.”

The 47-person-capacity wine bar also pays homage to Stockton’s storied jazz history. Gil Evans, arranger for some of Miles Davis’ most famous albums, and jazz piano legend Dave Brubeck are former Stockton residents. Mile Wine Co. features a private Brubeck Room for special events, and the business aims for a relaxed and classy vibe.

Mile Wine Co. marks Marsh’s first stint as an entrepreneur, and he’s encouraged that Stockton has thus far welcomed his wine bar. Wine flights and Thursday tastings are being added to the features, and the Mile Wine Co. website should be up shortly.

“We have repeat customers already,” Marsh said. “It’s been a dream come true so far.”
