Hold onto your hats, it’s going to be a blustery day in Sacramento.
Gusty northerly winds are predicted to develop across interior Northern California today, according to the National Weather Service. Gusts are expected to peak at 31 mph in Sacramento.
The dry north winds were already starting to pick up in parts of the Sacramento Valley early this morning. NWS observations at Chico and Mather Field airports between 4 and 5 a.m. showed sustained winds up to 20 mph with gusts around 25 mph.
Vacaville was reporting 14 mph winds with gusts to 23 mph.
The windy trend is expected to become more widespread as the day goes on with peak winds occurring late this afternoon and in the early evening.
Weather forecasters warn drivers of light, high profile vehicles to be especially mindful of the high winds. The NWS also noted that high winds and low humidity combine to increase fire danger.
