Re "Failure To compromise" (Page A1, Oct. 1): The headline is wrong. House Republicans tried compromising, starting with a defund Obamacare position. The president refused to discuss it.
House Republicans switched to a delay Obamacare stance. Again, no discussion.
Finally, GOP leadership tried an "eliminate all the exemptions and keep everyone under Obamacare" position. Still, no discussion.
This episode illustrates the administration's concept of compromise: Total capitulation by the opposition.
Later, Obama staged a press conference in the Rose Garden, spewing more distortions and lies about the GOP.
Yes, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, et al. forced this mess through Congress in 2010 and the U.S. Supreme Court rendered a tortured opinion, validating the legality of Obamacare.
But honest polls show that the American people do not want it, nor does American business, nor do unions! If they did, why have 1,200 exemptions been issued? Chronic GOP critics better take another look.
