Re "Summit at White House fails to alter hard lines" (Page A1, Oct. 3): The United States is the only industrialized country on this entire planet that has not developed a national health care system serving all of its citizens. Millions of children and adults in this, the richest nation on earth, sicken and die needlessly as a result. Like the Titanic, lifeboats have not been available to these "steerage class" passengers.
Obamacare offers a promising beginning for our people but is being targeted by a small vocal minority of Republicans in Congress who are holding our nation's budget hostage. In any other setting we would call such people terrorists.
As federal workers face an uncertain future without paychecks, these congressional hostage-takers continue to receive theirs. Let's take their pay away, too. That might push them to pass a simple, clean budget bill and raise our debt ceiling without further attacks on the law that supports the health of our citizens.
