Re "Parks closed, staff idled with no dent in deadlock" (Page A1, Oct. 2): It is hard to believe that current members of Congress such as Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, belong to the same party as President Abraham Lincoln. The choices and decisions Lincoln made were made to benefit the entire nation not just a select few.
I also believe that the same was true of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat. Although he came from an affluent family, he empathized with those that were less fortunate and he helped create many of our country's social programs which help the elderly and the poor. It is disturbing that the fight now going on in Washington D.C. is over a program which most industrialized nations provide their citizens, that being health care.
I personally do not believe that our country now is the same country which the "Greatest Generation" fought selflessly for in World War II.
