zzzzz. xxxxx Story is still developing. More changes. The Lodi Flames varsity volleyball team was firing on all cylinders against the Chavez Titans at Chavez High School on Wednesday. With a consistent service game, a stingy defense and powerful offense, the Flames defeated the Titans in straight sets, 25-13, 25-15, 25-12 to kick off San Joaquin Athletic Association play.
“Overall they stayed steady through the whole match and for the most part played strong all the way through. We have a tendency to let up, and so they did a pretty good job,” Lodi coach Krista Brereton said.
“We’re starting to get in a rhythm with our line-up and our routine.”
Brereton was very impressed with the team’s service performance, a successful outing that was the result of strict practice.
“We’ve been working on serving,” Brereton said. “They’ve been working real hard on their ace-to-error ratio, so they don’t have to run at practice.”
Alyssa Dettloff rattled off six serves for the Flames ((9-2, 1-0 San Joaquin Athletic Association) to close out the first set, 25-13. Dettloff had three aces, while adding a kill and four digs.
In the second set, Erin Moffat had a successful service turn. Down 4-2, Moffat started off 12 straight points on serve, helping Lodi up its lead to 14-4 over the Titans (5-5, 0-1 SJAA).
Moffat had three aces and six digs on the night. Kirstin Kielhold led the team with 28 assists, adding six kills, an ace, six digs and two blocks. Ally Leam, also had a strong performance with nine digs, eight kills, one assist and one ace.
“She’s playing well on defense and really learned how to hit really well,” Brereton said.
Gianna Maragliano had a team-high 10 kills and four blocks.
“She’s really starting to come alive with the blocking, hitting and being really impressive,” Brereton said.
The Flames, who will fight for league supremacy with defending champ Lincoln, continue SJAA play at home against Tracy on Monday. ––– ©2013 the Lodi News-Sentinel (Lodi, Calif.)
