Re "Summit at the White House fails to alter hard lines" (Page A1, Oct. 3): The Democrats have submitted, and the U.S. Senate has approved, a budget that is based on sequestration-level expenditures and is equivalent to the Paul Ryan budget submitted in 2012.
Although this budget solution will do little to grow the economy (as the Keynesian-based solution to the Great Depression did) it is in deference to the Republican wish to curtail government expenditures.
Thus the shutdown is not about the money, it's about keeping affordable health benefits away from lower and middle class people.
I would reckon that the tea party majority of blackmailers have health care either through their employers or through government-sponsored Medicare.
These gerrymandered representatives need not worry about being voted out by their constituents and so their intransigence will continue. Who will blink first?
