Re "Big Pharma means bigger costs" (Dan Morain, Sept. 29): Bee columist Dan Morain makes good arguments why Senate Bill 598 should be signed by the governor: Biosimilars will save lives of patients like myself, a stage IV cancer survivor, and provide needed relief for the current high cost of biologic products by making the necessary changes to enable biosimilars to be substituted at pharmacies with FDA approval of their interchangeability.
As a cancer patient, I live day by day not knowing how much longer I can afford the biologics that have been prescribed to me. I look forward to the significant cost savings that SB 598 will bring as evidenced in Europe where biosimilars are available at up to 30 percent less than innovator biologics.
By expanding biosimilar access in California, SB 598 will likely drive down costs of biologics as well, adding to additional health care savings for patients, employers and the state. -- Eve Bukowski, Davis, Vice President, State Government Relations, California Healthcare Institute
