Kudos to: Student tutors at Harriet G. Eddy Middle School

Accomplishment: Students are helping other students learn math

Details: Teachers Casey Behney and Matthew Halseth found 22 students willing to tutor other students who are struggling with math during zero period, an hour before most students start school. The kids provide individual math tutoring to their peers.

Kudos to: Bob Slobe

Accomplishment: Honored by Women Escaping a Violent Environment

Details: For more than three decades, Slobe has been instrumental in allowing WEAVE to expand services for families. A recent donation of additional land will add a playground and park to the WEAVE safe house campus. WEAVE has provided a safe shelter for victims of domestic violence since 1978.

Kudos to: Jolene Ford, Sacramento State graduate student

Accomplishment: Earned a $3,000 California State University Trustees’ Award

Details: Ford was diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s after a blood transfusion. She struggled with depression, alcoholism and drug addiction before getting her life back on track. Ford, who helps others with HIV/AIDS, is scheduled to earn her master’s degree in social work in the spring.
