Attorneys Toni Carbone, left, and Christine Morse Galves with program particpants, in the Ascend program at Sacramento Pipeworks on Wednesday October 2, 2013 in Sacramento. They were tired of seeing their clients stuck in the revolving door of the criminal justice system. The two criminal defense attorneys created an alternative sentencing program, Ascend, that incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, education about the criminal justice system and general education about health and wellness. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department began sending home-detention inmates to their program. Sixty-one students have passed through the program.
