A program participant has a monitor strapped to his ankle as he ascends the climbing wall with the assistance of Christine Morse Galves at Sacramento Pipeworks on Wednesday October 2, 2013 in Sacramento. The lawyers were tired of seeing their clients stuck in the revolving door of the criminal justice system. The two criminal defense attorneys created an alternative sentencing program, Ascend, that incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, education about the criminal justice system and general education about health and wellness. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department began sending home-detention students to their program. Sixty-one inmates have passed through the program.
