Today’s forecast: Breezy and cooler in Sacramento, snow in Sierra

A fast-moving, early season storm is expected to deliver snow to elevations above 6,000-feet in the Sierra and provide cooler temperatures in the Sacramento region.

The National Weather Service notes that today’s light snow in the mountains could make highway passes slippery. The snow showers are likely to diminish tonight.

In the Sacramento region, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70s today. The average daily high temperature for the first week in October is around 82 degrees.

Forecasters say look for winds to pick up tonight in Sacramento, perhaps gusting to near 20 mph. The 7-day forecast for the Sacramento region from the NWS:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 53. Northwest wind 5 to 14 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. South wind 5 to 8 mph.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 51. Light south wind.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 77. Light and variable wind.

Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 52.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 77.

Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 51.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 79.

Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 53.

Columbus Day: Sunny, with a high near 80.

Monday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 51.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 80.
